Influence the Court

Join the Grand Mogul in a tour around the twelve provinces of India. Each province is identified on the board by a unique color and pattern based on real cloth patterns from the region. During each visit, players will strategically use their cards to increase their influence to claim the province or leverage that influence to gain other rewards.

To influence the court during a visit to a province, add one card to your row by playing it from your hand faceup in front of you. Each card in your row shows one or more court member and contributes to your influence with them.

During the first turn of a visit, you can start your row with any color card. After that first play, additional cards must match the color of the first card in your row. Colorless cards can be used in addition to a colored card to give you an additional icon for influence, but they can’t be played on their own.

Players will continue to add a card to their own and spread their influence until they do not wish to influence the court any more or are forced to withdraw because they do not have any other cards that match the color of their row. Once a player withdraws, check for majority. A player can take tokens from the court, place palaces and score points but they won’t be able to add more cards for that visit.

Here the player has two of the vizier symbol in their row. If that is the majority then that player takes the vizier token from the board.

Impress the Advisors

For each advisor token you place in front of you, place one of your palaces on an open city in the current province. If you place a palace on an open city where a bonus token is, claim that token. If you have two advisor tokens of the same type at the end of a visit, return those tokens to the supply and take the advisor’s matching prestige card (either from the supply or another player’s hand).

There are a few different members of the court that you can work to impress. Each advisor’s prestige card has a different ability that can help you spread your influence in future visits.

The general is a veteran of several military campaigns. Once you gain his prestige card it can be used as a colorless influence card with one elephant symbol.

The monk is the Grand Mogul’s personal spiritual advisor. The monk’s prestige card will allow you to treat the card that was played with this card as matching the first color of the first card in your row.

The princess counsels the Grand Mogul on social affairs. Her prestige card will immediately score you two points.

The vizier is a political minister beyond his many years. The vizier’s prestige card will act as a colorless influence card with one Grand Mogul symbol on it.

Score Commodities

During your visits to the twelve provinces, you can earn the commodities of the area. India is rich with spices, jewels, tea, and rice. Players can claim commodities by winning a visit with the elephant symbol to take the province token and by claiming bonus tokens in that province by placing palaces on them.

Each commodity will score a point. Then each commodity on your bonus tokens or other province tokens that matches the commodities on the token you just scored will also score you a point. Don’t underestimate the power of commodities! Matching them up for extra points could get you ahead in the fight for India.
